A wee recap of today:

With a rather soggy start to the day, one may have been forgiven for switching off the alarm and pulling the duvet over the head again. However, it was great to see that not one of the confirmed 12 failed to show up to the start line, albeit with a variety of levels of enthusiasm!

Due to roadworks, last year’s route was unrideable and therefore the alternative Croftamie route was used. A shorter loop of 11.2 miles saw the riders completing two circuits.

The starting group of Claire, Stevie W, Jonny and Tom M aka “The Joeys” set off first with a 6 minute handicap over the second group of Perdro D, Dougie D, Stevie P and Lorne aka “The Wallabies”.

The Joeys worked together exceptionally well, under the leadership of Stevie W, and held a strong time gap over the second group, holding 4 minutes after the first lap.

The third group on the road set off at 2mins after group 2. “The Bucks” aka Brian M, Graeme D, Dave B and Stevie H set off with their work cut out in eating into the 8minute handicap of group 1.

The climb out of Croftamie proved the Achilles heel of a couple of riders. Pedro D fell off the back of group 2 but he held his group in sight long enough to follow them round the left turn towards Killin. Unfortunately the same could not be said for Stevie H who missed the turn off and carried on his own merry way on his own merry route...!

After lap one, with Pedro falling too far off the pace, he graciously admitted defeat and pulled out, his recent “iron distance” triathlon clearly still in his legs.

Group 3 had cut into the time advantage over group 2 by one minute, despite the loss of Stevie H who was half way to Kilbowie by that stage.

The rain made more of an appearance on lap 2 but the time gaps were becoming less and less. At the Blane Smiddy bridge, Brian M made a jump off group 3 and paced on to the back of group 2. Sitting in their shelter for a while he then launched an attack up the final straight.

However, he wasn’t quick enough to reach the wheels of The Joeys, who had maintained their pace and teamwork to the final run-in, at which point Tom sprinted for the finish line, crossing a few seconds before Jonny. Claire followed shortly after, still being given vocal encouragement by Stevie W who crossed just behind her. Brilliant ride by Group 1. Brian crossed the line a few seconds behind having out-sprinted the remaining riders, all of whom were over the line within a minute of the first place rider, Tom.

After most retired to the warmth and dry of the cafe, Eddie went off to search out Stevie H who finally returned with a most entertaining strava upload! Tom was presented with the winner’s Tankard and Stevie H with the wooden spoon!

Overall a great day with a great bunch of people, both riders and supporters. Thanks to Graeme Daly for coming up with the idea and organising it. The handicap system worked well as all the riders came in within a minute of each other. The general consensus was that this route was better than last year’s and hopefully we will do it all again next year.
